Digital Youth Culture & Safety Report · Opening Statements in Oakland, an Advisory Jury, and the Scariest Number That Turned Out to Be a Checkbox
Week of August 17–22, 2026: on August 18 opening statements were delivered in Oakland federal court before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who convened an eight-person ADVISORY jury — meaning the verdict and penalties ultimately rest with her, not the jury. Only four states are trying the case (California, Colorado, Kentucky, New Jersey) on behalf of a 29-state coalition. New Mexico’s judgment is $942 million, not $567 million — and none of it is in effect after Meta moved on August 18 to freeze enforcement with a $1.8 billion bond. The headline finding: Stanford’s Riana Pfefferkorn found that at least 78% of the reports behind the widely quoted “400,000 AI child-abuse reports” figure involved no AI-generated material at all. Fourth straight week with no new challenge and no new slang — and this time all five categories were researched, so every zero is a checked zero.

Digital Youth Culture & Safety Report · 29 States v. Meta, the Number Everyone Is Quoting Wrong & Why October's Verdict Won't Be Binding
Week of August 10–15, 2026: on August 12 jury selection began in Oakland federal court before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, with 29 states alleging Meta illegally collected and used children's data under COPPA and California law; opening statements are set for August 18. Days earlier a New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $567 million, and on August 10 Meta lost a bid to delay. The detail nobody is reporting: Rogers seated an advisory jury, so a headline 'verdict' will not be binding. Plus four corrections — the '400,000 AI child-abuse reports' figure is NCMEC's broad GAI-nexus flag, not the 182,000 it is presented as; '764' is a coercion network, not a slang code; 'six-seven' was 2025's Word of the Year; and the back-to-school scam tell you can teach in one sentence.

Digital Youth Culture & Safety Report · Three Courtrooms, the Five App Features Named in Court & the Phone Ban That's Working
Week of August 3–8, 2026: a litigation week, not a trend week. Four families sued Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube in Delaware on July 30; Tennessee's consumer-protection trial against Meta is in progress in Nashville; a federal bellwether hits Oakland in August. Because these are trials, the blamed features are named in public filings — autoplay, infinite scroll, push notifications, streaks and appearance filters, every one a setting you can switch off. Plus why Austin ISD's record 8,200 safety alerts are good news, and zero claims surviving verification in four of five categories.
